Free Crochet Thermal Stitch Beanie Pattern

Meredith asked if I had written down how I made my latest crochet beanies. I decided to post a free Crochet Thermal Stitch Beanie pattern instead. For everyone!

There is a full-length, extensive instruction video available to show you how to make one of these great hats.

Here’s My Free Crochet Thermal Stitch Beanie Pattern

Materials

Any weight of yarn

Uses about 140 -180 yards of yarn

Gauge

Gauge is irrelevant since you do shaping and sizing as you go along

Abbreviations

ch: chain
rnd(s): round(s)
sc: single crochet

tsc: thermal single crochet – single crochet into the back of the loop on the previous round and the front of the loop on the second previous round
st(s): stitch(es)

Crown Shaping

Rnd 1: Using magic ring technique create a ring of 8 sc. Connect the ring by working a slip stitch into the first sc on the round.

Rnd 2: 2 sc in first st, 2 sc in each st around—16 sc.

Rnd 3: Connect the round by working a slip stitch into the first sc of the last round. Ch 1, sc into the back of the loop of the first st and each st around—16 sc.

Rnd 4: Connect the round by working a slip stitch into the first sc of the last round. Ch 1, TURN YOUR WORK, tsc into the first st and each st around—16 sc.

Rnd 5 (increase round): Connect the round by working a slip stitch into the first sc of the last round. Ch 1, TURN YOUR WORK, 2 tsc into the first st and each st around—32 sc.

Rnd 6: Connect the round by working a slip stitch into the first sc of the last round. Ch 1, TURN YOUR WORK, tsc into the first st and each st around (since there are only 16 stitches in the second previous round, the tsc will have to be made in the back of the loop of the previous round stitch and two tsc into the front of the loop on the second previous st—32 sc.

Continue to work non-increase tsc rounds (Rnd 4) until the shape of the disc looks like a shallow bowl or a yarmulke. That’s an indicator when you need to do an tsc increase rounds (Rnds 5 and 6).

When the diameter of the crown is about 6.75″ – 7″ (17-18 cm), continue to work Rnd 4 until the length of the hat is as tall as you want it.

While your gauge and head-sizes may vary, here are the numbers I used for various weight yarns and hook sizes.

  1. TURN YOUR WORK?! Mind blowing. Definitely want to try this. These are so much more fashionable looking than the crochet hats I have made in the past which to me look like wearing a dishcloth or a Hacky-sack on your head. Thanks so much! And by second previous you mean the row you made before yiu made the precios row, right? Like 2 rows back?

    1. Making a hat in-the-round and turning your work seemed so odd to me, but it’s necessary so that you can layer the rounds like a tiled roof on alternate sides of the work.

And I agree completely about crochet hats…but I really love how this one looks and fits.

I just finished a YouTube tutorial on the hat that I’ll be posting in tomorrow’s blog entry.

  2. Yay I’m excited. I don’t crochet much but this beanie has me wanting to pick up a hook. I’ll be watching your tutorial first. Thank you!
