Would You Yarn Craft With Me?
I’ve never been to Gay Spirit Camp at Easton Mountain before. I’m wondering if a workshop (or pop-up workshop) on yarn craft would be appealing.
Yarn Craft Workshop Ideas
As part of my invite to Gay Spirit Camp next month, I’ve been asked to conduct a workshop. I have prepared what I think is an excellent workshop on No-Cost Self-Publishing and I think that will be very well received.
They also allow participants to do pop-up workshops during the week, and I though I might do a craft table workshop. I’ll bring materials to let guys try out knitting, crochet and daisy-loom flowers.
The daisy-loom flowers idea is an easy one. I can quickly show guys how to make flowers and let them use the vintage daisy loom and show crochet or knitting ideas while they work on a flower.

Crochet and knitting are a bit more complex. I’m thinking about demonstrating how to make hair scrunchies.

It’s not exactly an easy pattern to follow, so I’ve been trying out other ideas.
And for knitting, I’m thinking about starting with a simple garter-stitch scarf.
As I noted, I’m not sure how much appeal there’d be in a non-fiber group of guys. If there’s hardly any, it’ll suck and if there’s way too much, I’ll be a bit overwhelmed with trying to help everyone.
Obviously, I’m still thinking this all through. Any thoughts or ideas greatly appreciated.
Current Knitting
I have been making some progress on the Aurora Cabin Shawl by Stephen West using Yarn Dragon yarns.

I’ve made it to the garter-ridge section of the shawl which is relaxing and mindless.
I’ve also tried out a free crochet pattern for possible use at the pop-up workshop if I decide to do it.

Any guesses as to what they are?

In my crochet intro class a few years ago, we made cup sleeves. So easy, and I now have the pattern memorized and can crank one out in about a half hour using (cheap) dishrag cotton. (I alternate this with my fave crochet discloth pattern for a project I can take everywhere and work on in just about any conditions. Both great for gifting.) Easy & useful– might appeal to new fiber artists. Just another idea for a beginner project. Have fun at camp!
As a formally trained educator, I would say stay away from shaping for introductions. I like the cup sleeve idea. You could always do a second step one another day if you want. Really think summer camp. Lanyards and pom Poms etc. People are going to be just wanting to have fun and if they get frustrated or something takes more than an hour to complete, they will be sad. You could frankly do garter stitch cup sleeves too.
And YES I would absolutely craft with you at Gay Spirit Camp. Unfortunately, I think that being just sort of vaguely not entirely straight/cis gendered female is probably not really enough of a qualification. If they ever have a “super allies” spirit camp, let us know! Have a grand time. And again, KISS (Keep It Simple Smartie). Oh, and remember to use moderately nice yarn that won’t give people the creeps or hand cramps to touch/use. And have fun, don’t work too hard!
