Beautiful Snow
Many of you know my feelings about Winter. I whine about Winter often. But I would definitely classify this first snowfall as a beautiful snow.
Beautiful Snow – Perfect for Hanukkah

We woke up to about six inches of snow yesterday morning. I enjoyed everything about it. It was beautiful. And I even enjoyed shoveling our very small driveway. I also got to shovel snow off our deck.
The snow looked a little more fluffy than it was. So it was a bit heavier than I expected, but I was grateful for the exercise. The snow did close down anything. All the plows and salt trucks were out in-force early to make the roads easy to drive on.
Growing up, getting a snowfall at Christmas was always kind of magical. I’m hopeful the magical feeling was the same for all those celebrating Hanukkah this year.
Readers’ Comment’s Questions
Regarding the Costco Serrano ham from Friday’s blog, Judy writes:
“My experience is that you can return anything to Costco for any reason or for ‘just because’. Have you tried that?”
I return a lot of items to Costco when they’re not what I want and I have only ever once had them be a little irritable with me (I returned 8 pair of laundered underwear in a plastic grocery bag with no packaging). I couldn’t bring myself to return this item. I chalked it up to a “lesson learned.”
Regarding garter-stitch striping, Laurie writes:
“Would it look the same on both sides if you did 4 rows of each? How many rows of each color were in the earlier garter scarf?”
Trying to describe how garter striping looks in written text is complex. So I didn’t even mention in my previous answer to you that the current scarf is knit in four rows of grey and two rows of purple. And it still looks very different on the reverse. Four rows of grey and four rows of purple would look a little more striped on the reverse, but the ridges where the colors change would still make it look a lot less stripey.
I tried looking for a YouTube video that explained this, but I couldn’t find anything. Had I time, I’d work up a bunch of different swatches and do a video, but I’ve got a couple of other priorities at the moment.
Current Knitting
I was able to complete the bespoke garter-stripe scarf for a friend.

He was pleased with the result (as was I). The yarn is a nice, silky alpaca yarn and is very warm.
Made it back to the fingerless gloves from my nephew.

I’ve made it past the thumb opening on the first glove. I forgot how much attention this pattern requires and how much work it is for what seems like a simple glove. But I’m enjoying the challenge.

By chance, I am beginning to crochet a border on a knitted triangular shawl using black and white yarns, which resembles this scarf quite closely. I have been using this two-color technique lately to use up small amounts of yarn for several flat-pattern projects, and sometimes different two-color combinations might appear on a single item. Your scarf looks beautiful!
Best wishes for a very happy holiday season!

Thank you, Joe, for the idyllic Chanukah photo. Happy second night in a year when we all need to celebrate the light.
