Taking Comfort

I’m not typical one who indulges in self-pity. Typically when life gets rough, I take comfort in what I enjoy and focus on what I can.

Taking Comfort During Troubling Times

For anyone who knows me, you know that I’m not a fan of Winter and that I detest all that our current government stands for. Add a few issues with a knitting project and computer issues and you get my current state of mind.

It’s times like these that I don’t wait for nurturing or comfort to be offered. I know what it takes to ease my soul and I do that.

I enjoy the routines of my day, especially the hours just after waking. Adding more meditation and inward reflection to my day always helps as well. Don’t get me wrong, I still do as much as I can to make life better. But sometimes just not being discouraged is the most I can do.

Current Knitting

I got a little more finished on the Thermal Crochet Neon Hat over the weekend.

Not much worked on. In addition to a lot of snow to shovel this weekend, I also had to start a Melt the ICE Hat.

I’m not overly pleased with some aspects of what I’ve knit so far, so I’ll be ripping back about half of this work. It is not the design’s fault…it’s all mine.

  1. Yes, these times make me think of Elizabeth Zimmerman’s words, “Knit on with confidence and hope, through all crises.” This is a crisis like we have never seen, and the daily small frustrations of our lives can be overwhelming on top of everything else going on.

    Be kind to yourself.

    1. Thanks for this reminder of EZ’s profound words! Just what I needed as I prepare to start my own Melt the ICE hat while stewing about events in Minneapolis (I’m only about half a state away!) in particular and the state of our country and world in general.

      1. Never have her words been more needed, right? Stay strong. I am in Boston but I spend summers in Maine not far from Lewiston.

  2. I’m Canadian and find I am very anxious with what is happening in the political world. I will take Elizabeth Zimmerman’s word to heart. I have just downloaded the Melt the Ice hat pattern. Take care everyone!

  3. In addition to EZ’s inspiring words, there’s Stephen West’s signature, “Keep On Knittin’, Kitten!”
Last week, when I first came across the Melt the ICE hat on Ravelry, there were approximately 300 posted projects. As of this moment, there are 1,789 posted. A designer friend once mentioned that, generally, double the amount of knitters have purchased a pattern than post their work. We are part of a just community.

  4. I’m stunned how quickly the Melt the Ice hat has taken off. When I first looked at other peoples’ projects (two weeks ago) there were only a few completed. A week later there were dozens to look at. I’m still not very clear about what it is *supposed to* look like/how it is supposed to fit. But I’ll finish the first one I’m working on and try again with any modifications.

About keeping your chin up through difficulty… I like GGmadeit on instagram. Lots of orange knitting inspiration! But TBH, I’m struggling too… feels like, as awful as it is now, it’s going to get a lot worse.

  5. Today is a good day to start a Melt the Ice Hat. It is $5 for a good cause and will keep me calm and centered, right now there are 1913 projects posted on Ravelry. Hope to have it done (along with my knitting homework) for VKL

  6. I will be starting our hats as soon as the roads are clear and I can get to the yarn shop! Love the words of inspiration and shout-out to GG – she really is a positive light. I am discouraged but will keep plugging away. Thanks for your thoughts and the hat rec. Stay safe & warm!
