I Was Sick

This past week I was sick. I had some cold or flu that knocked me out. I slept a lot and was still so groggy, I didn’t want to make any decisions of import.

Deferring Decisions While I Was Sick

Mostly it was an astonishing amount of congestion. In my head and chest. Fortunately, the symptoms (sneezing and coughing mostly) slowed down while I slept. Which is good, because pretty much all I did was sleep. I also had suprisingly little hunger. Food did not appeal to me at all. The one other symptom I was surprised about was that my mind was really unfocused and groggy. Perhaps it was from all the exhaustion and associated sleeping.

In the few hours of being quasi-awake, I did end up finishing the Thermal Crochet Beanie in rainbow colors on one side and solid orange the other.

It was just the right length and I think I would have enough yarn to make another copy of the hat.

But I noticed something I wasn’t happy about.

There is usually a seam on this design of hat. It’s because it’s not really done in-the-round. It’s done back and forth. The start and end of a row is connected as if it’s done in-the-round, but the effect creates what is usually a subtle seam. I thought the seam looked too pronounced.

You might notice the rainbow-side seam looks even more stretched out than the orange-side seam. It is. In my grogginess, I thought I’d try a couple things to try and make the seam look subtler. I quickly realized I wasn’t in a state to be making any judgment calls. Even about a crocheted hat. So I decided to defer any decisions until I felt less groggy.

I was feeling much better over the weekend. You can see the result of my clearer mind in Current Crochet.

With a clearer head, it was obvious to me that I had no idea how to make the seam look better. I decided I had two or three other issues I wanted to fix with this hat anyway, so I ripped it all out.

While ripping, I specifically looked where the cross-bar of yarn was created so I could tighten that up in the second attempt at the hat.

My renewed efforts are better and I’m making some progress.

The one good thing about making a mistake on something as insignificant as a hat, was that I deferred all important decisions about anything last week. I was unclear enough to not even know I wasn’t thinking clearly…until I made the mistake with the hat.

Lesson learned.
