Aging Gracefully - A Tough Balance 06-10-26 01

Aging Gracefully

When it comes to aging gracefully, I’m finding it more and more difficult. And the goalpost is constantly changing. At least for me.

Aging Gracefully – A Tough Balance

One of the symptoms of the most recent cold I had, was that I had very little hunger. Food just didn’t appeal to me for about a week. I ended up losing four or five pounds over the course of the week. Five pounds fewer to carry around is surprisingly quite a big difference in some everyday activities. Just walking up and down stairs is quite a bit easier. Mostly on my joints.

Also surprisingly, is the change in my face and neck from such a seemingly small amount of weight loss. We had our monthly haircuts yesterday and the entire section above my shoulders looks different to me. I appear more drawn and perhaps more tired looking. My neck also has a lot more loose skin. I knew someone about my age who’s weight would change seasonally. And I always recalled when he was holding less weight, his face looked older to me. I’m seeing the same thing in myself.

Do I care? Does looking more youthful matter very much any more?

For some things, I think it matters.

How I’m treated in public differs quite a bit based on how old someone perceives me to be. And in social media, including this blog, the reaction I get is definitely affected for some people based on how youthful and/or attractive I am.

Again…do I care?

I’m not sure yet. I’m playing it by ear right now and will adapt as I go along. Let’s see if it needs to be a conscious decision, or whether I can just be as mindful and present in my day-to-day life and react accordingly. Ideally, that would be my preferred way of being in the world. I’ll let you know how that works out.

Current Crochet

After the restart, I was able to get a lot done on the current rainbow Thermal Crochet Beanie.

You can see the seam on both the inside and outside of the hat and it’s significantly better than it was before I ripped it out. I was able to fix two or three other issues as well, so I’m quite pleased with how this is turning out.

  1. Joe, I understand your aging dilemma/quandry, as I have a few years on you. At the risk of seeming overtly flirtatious, you look great, period.
Darn, I still need to get back to learning how to do the circular cast-on for the Thermal Crochet Beanie, lo these years after you patiently instructed me. It’s back to your YouTuber on the technique.
Cheers to you and many thanks for the comforting positivity of your posts.

  2. Okay I’m going to swear so don’t read if it offends- fuck aging gracefully, whatever that means. I’m a woman in my 50s and the changes my body and mind have been through in the last 10 years are flat out insane. I don’t even know what aging gracefully means, but I protest. This sucks. I’m not talking about aesthetics, but that’s not great either. Luckily my capacity to give a fuck what anyone else thinks has reduced drastically as my gray hair, wrinkles and aches have increased.
I try to stay focused on things that make me feel good and bring me joy. This blog is one of those things. Getting older is not optional, so we may as well have as much fun as possible, right?
Thank you for your regular posts- I don’t comment very often, but I’m always cheering you on.
