The Delaware River Canal on the Pennsylvania side of the River has had some issues in the last decade or so.

The Friends of the Delaware River Canal ask – What’s Going On Here?

Actually, they finally answer the question that many of the locals have been asking this past month…and in previous months.

First of all, the Delaware Canal “Park” is a long, narrow “linear park.” It’s managed by the Pennsylvania Department of Conservation and Natural Resources (DCNR), running almost sixty miles from Easton to Bristol, Pennsylvania. You’d think that the State would be responsible for upkeep. If they are, they do a shitty job of it.

The section of the canal closest to my home is supposed to be kept filled by a pump in Center Bridge, PA where the canal is dammed off to the North. I think there are issues with sink-holes or structural issues with the canal, so there is no water in it except ground water North of Center Bridge. This past April, a relatively new pump broke down. As has happened a number of times in the past, the canal goes dry. All of the fish in the canal are left to die. It’s rather gruesome when this happens. I’m sure you can also imagine the smell. The State isn’t very quick to respond when these failures take place.

Thanks to the Friends of the Delaware Canal, there has been a temporary pump installed. The canal is slowly refilling. Again.

It’s one of my biggest pet-peeves. Charitable organizations that take on the responsibilities that government taxes should be paying for. Regardless, I support the Friends. They truly care about our community.

Current Knitting/Spinning

I was making great progress on the two key-hole scarves when I had a small set-back. I finished the first one and I love how it turned out.

It’s rustic and still elegant. One of my favorite combinations of characteristics. I also started work on the second one, using my handspun mohair/Romney yarn.

I supplemented my handspun with some leftover silk/wool yarn. But I’m pretty certain I won’t have enough handspun to finish the project. I’ll have to see if I can spin up more yarn quickly. I do have to wash the finished yarn to fluff it up a bit. So we’ll see if I can get it all done by tomorrow.
